Herman ze German, Soho

Smoked hotdog, Herman ze German, Soho, London

Bockwurst (£4.25)

I’d dearly love to write this whole thing in faux-German sausage puns, but the fact is this cheerful hotdog outlet has already won the race by claiming that their ‘wurst is ze best’. And it’s not the best – Big Apple Hot Dogs would take some beating – but it is excellent, quick and affordable, which is quite the triple threat in Soho. Added innuendo surely means it’ll last that bit longer than most on Old Compton Street, too.

Herman ze German, Old Compton Street, London The bockwurst sausage is gently smoky, firm, juicy and has not a hint of the synthetic flavour that comes with street meat-style weiners. Housed in a soft, fresh bun and nestled alongside crispy onion sprinkles, it’s a very satisfying package, and while the flavours aren’t life-changing, there’s little more you could want from a hotdog. Apart from a knowing wink, and you’re sorted for that, too.
