H T Harris, Italian deli, Fitzrovia, London
There aren’t many things more satisfying than a massive sandwich, especially when it’s filled with fine Italian goods and costs you less than a fiver. H T Harris is the sort of deli that looks like it might play host to more exciting, Scorsese-worthy types of business than the sale of lasagne, but the all-Italian staff are too friendly for that to actually be the case.

Sandwich from H T Harris, Italian Deli, London

Parma ham and mozzarella sandwich (£4.50)

You pick between a big, crisp hunk of fresh bread or a wedge of focaccia then choose a meat from the selection in the counter, and they combine the two, then pack it with creamy mozzarella (the most flavoursome example I’ve had outside of Italy) and salad, then whack it in a grill for a few minutes until its got a gentle crunch on the outside and a little melt in the middle. My only complaint is that the bread is so huge it could take a bit more filling, but you’re getting such good value for money that it definitely shouldn’t put you off. This is a big eat, but you can do it. Buon appetito.
