A window display made from wooden crates and corrugated cardboard signs might be annoying in any other venue, but Orchard can totally pull it off, partly because it helps to offset the stern (and sort of Versace-trashy, let’s be honest) columns on Sicilian Avenue. It’s by no means a cheap eat, but it’s a good one. Their vegetarian dishes are imaginative and hearty, and the unpolished wood and enamelware inside make you feel a bit like you’ve had lunch in the farmhouse from The Railway Children.
I tucked into their ‘mug of soup and a sarnie’ option for £7.95. The sandwich half, though of the highest quality, was less exciting than the sum of its parts, but the mug of smoky celeriac soup with truffle oil and roasted seeds was bloody fantastic. Ultimate hug in a mug stuff, and not the sort of treat you’d find easily elsewhere. On a more financially buoyant day I’ll definitely head back for one of their vegetarian pasties and fancy salads. And probably more soup.
